Caring for cast iron cookware Lodge:
- Washing and maintaining without chemical non-stick coating cast iron is easy, it only takes a few minutes - the reward is an almost unlimited lifespan of the cookware.
- With regular use and proper care, the natural non-stick properties of the seasoning, i.e. the layer of baked-on edible oil, are improved.
- Don't use utensils to store ready-to-eat food - leaving them for long periods (especially with acidic foods such as tomatoes, beans, wine or vinegar) can impair seasoning and encourage corrosion.
- Don't put off washing it for long, but also don't put it under the water hot right away - let it cool down.
- Wash it in warm running water and dry it immediately with a cloth to prevent moisture from remaining on the surface.
- Use a polycarbonate scraper or a dish brush for burns; a small amount of detergent is possible when needed.
- Never leave cast iron cookware to deglaze - not even for burnt-on residue, as this is detrimental to seasoning.
- After each wash, rub a light coating of edible oil all over the dishes and wipe dry with a paper towel.
- Use just enough oil to restore the shine and not leave a sticky film - this will preserve the seasoning and protect the cast iron from moisture.
