Product detailed description

Campbell Distillers based in the Scottish Highlands asked us to develop a glass for their Edradour and Aberlour products. Single Malt, a drink with a dose of individuality, is made according to a long tradition and then left to mature in casks of various origins.

Highland, Lowland and Islay whisky or Irish Malt whiskey are made from 100% barley, which permanently defines their character. Although they vary greatly in taste, a glass of Riedel Single Malt Whisky is particularly suited to showcase their barley character.

Whisky is most commonly drank from the Glencairn type whisky glass, which, unfortunately, due to the subtle nuances of Single Malt, is not suitable in this case. The Scots love to add a drop of water to their whisky. This is to better emphasise the flavour and help soft flavour nuances come to the surface. We had a clear objective for our Riedel Single Malt glass: to achieve the same effect without "diluting" the concentration and further emphasise the origin of the Scottish classic so that it cannot be confused with Cognac.

We know that a thin and tall shape softens the sharpness of alcohol. To fine-tune it, we made many different prototypes, varying in diameter and height. The flared rim of the glass is known to accentuate the fruity aroma and eliminate the sharpness of the alcohol. The final tuning took place at Aberlour in the Highlands, under the guidance of the distillery master and management representatives.

Single shape was selected from a vast number of candidate as the undoubtedly perfect. The Single Malt Whisky Sommeliers glass highlights the sweetness and delicately creamy taste of Single Malt. In the aftertaste, that is where this new shape lets the strength of the alcohol come to the surface.

We recommend the Riedel Single Malt Whisky Sommeliers glass for:

  • Single Malt Whisky
  • Whisky, Whiskey

SOMMELIERS series:

Claus Riedel introduced the first series of glasses for connoisseurs in 1973 in Orvieto in collaboration with the Italian Sommeliers Association A.I.S. (Associazione Italiana Sommeliers). The series includes 10 different sizes.

From this moment on, the world of wine has changed fundamentally.

In different regions and on different continents, wines are produced today that did not exist or were completely unknown at the time. Therefore, the development of the Sommeliers series was continued by his son George Riedel until the Sommeliers became an extensive "vitrum-vinoteque" at the highest level of technical development.

In 1991 Robert Parker, editor of Wine Advocate magazine wrote: "The best glasses, both from a technical point of view and from the point of view of maximum enjoyment, are those made by Riedel. The effect that these glasses give to fine wine is truly extraordinary. I can't express enough how much of a difference it makes."

Thanks to worldwide demand, the Sommeliers series is now the absolute top wine glass series and the most successful hand-blown wine glass series in the world. Each glass is made separately: the top is blown in a mould, the stem and base are shaped by hand according to production methods developed in the early 1900s.

The glassmakers use their talents, their skills and care for details are essential to give the Sommeliers series the craftsmanship customers expect. Sommeliers are made of glass with more than 24% lead content.
